It can be a good solution for you who have problem with narrow space or room for your CNC Mill. For you who are not familiar with CNC machines and milling machine, this discussion might be quite frustrating. Therefore, we are going to discuss briefly all you need to know about CNC mill and also the Tabletop version.

What Is Milling Machine?

For you who are familiar with cutting and drilling operation, you might have heard about milling machine. Milling machine is a machine that you use to remove some material in the surface of solid material. Commonly, you can use milling machine to manipulate metal. However, you can also use milling machine to manipulate another solid material like wood.

Similar with drilling and cutting operation, milling machine also uses specific cutting tool or cutter to cut the solid material. Milling machine works by feeding the rotary cutter to the solid materials. Although it has similar concept with drilling machine, in the way it uses rotary cutter, but there are some specific feature that make milling machine is different from drilling machine. In drilling machine, you can only move the machine up and down or in a single axe. However, in milling machine, the cutter can move in many different axes. Commonly, milling machine uses 3 axes that allow the machines to move in three different directions. Each direction uses letter “X”, “Y” and Z as the symbol of the axes. X is for forward and backward; Y is for right and left; and Z is for up and down. Beside 3 axes configuration, there are 5 axes that allow the machine to move in five different directions.

In order to do the milling operation, the machine will use milling tool or cutter that has multiple cutting points or saws. The cutter will rotate and when it touches the surface on the material, the rotary cutter will cut or remove the material. You can adjust the cutting point or saw in many orientations to create some different results. The straight orientation aims to cut the denser material, while the helical orientation aims to create smooth result in softer materials. In order to attach the cutter and the machine, you should attach the cutter to Arbor or mandrel. It aims to hold the cutter firmly.

In the milling process, there are two major classes: face milling and peripheral milling. Face milling means that the cutter will cut the flat surface. Peripheral milling is a milling process that can be used in a surface that is not flat such as deep slots, threats, and gear teeth.

Based on the orientation to the work piece and the degree of motions, there are some type of milling machines such as knee-type, plain vertical and horizontal, universal  horizontal milling machine, ram-type milling machine and swivel cutter head ram-type. Knee-type will create vertical workspace which supported by a knee. With plain vertical and horizontal, you can adjust the machine vertically or horizontally. In Universal horizontal milling machine, you find a table that can be move 45 degree from the standard horizontal orientation. With ram-type, you can adjust the cutting tool, using movable spindle. In swivel cutter head ram-type, you can completely rotate the machine, includes the worktable, from vertical to horizontal orientation.

Traditionally, you can control the milling machine manually, by your hand. However, with the rapid development of technology, CNC Technology, and the concern of safety, you can control the milling machine using CNC. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. It means that you can control the milling operation by simple sending sort of numerical codes or signal from your computer. M-Codes and G-Codes are two common codes in CNC operation. Those codes aim to describe contour of the material, how it moves, and when the machine can automatically turn on and off. You can also use the computer to draw a design or pattern that will be implemented in the material.

Based on the function, CNC mill is similar with conventional milling machine. However, from the way you operate and some components, there are some difference between CNC mill and conventional milling machine. In CNC mill you can avoid the risk of injure since you can operate the machine automatically and remotely. In CNC mill there are also some additional components that can connect the milling machine and the computer such as drive amplifier and encoders. Driver amplifier aims to be a receiver of the numerical code. Encoders will analyze the operation and will send the feedback to the CNC system.

Commonly, CNC mill comes in quite large size. Big industry uses the CNC mill to create more efficient production. You need a quite large room in order to put or install your CNC mill.  However, it might be a serious problem for you who have narrowed room or space. Therefore, tabletop CNC mill can be a good option for you. Tabletop CNC mill is a CNC mill that has smaller size and capacity. In fact, many people often call it as mini CNC mill. You can put this type of CNC mill on the tabletop, so it doesn’t need too much space to store the tabletop CNC mill. The table top version has similar function with the conventional CNC mill. However, it will influence the capacity of the operation. You cannot cut large material using this type of CNC mill, but it is still very helpful to cut or produce small detail or components.

Basically, flexibility is the most important advantage in table top CNC mill. You can put this CNC mill in many different circumstances. You don’t have to worry about not having enough room to store the CNC mill. Beside flexibility, cost will also become the advantage of tabletop CNC mill. Relatively, this kind of CNC mill is cheaper than the conventional CNC mill. You don’t have to worry about the quality. Cheaper cost doesn’t mean that you have lower quality. It is only a matter of size and capacity. You still can get clean cuts with this tabletop CNC mill
